Types of pension platform

Slightly arbitrarily we have split the providers up into different sections below. It's always a good idea to save for your retirement but as with all investing your capital is at risk (one of those legal terms we have to say) but there's subtly different types of companies and platforms which offer low cost SIPPs (plus at least one which isn't really a SIPP at all). SIPP providers appearing on this site is not a recommendation; you should thoroughly research them yourself.

Traditional Online Platforms

The bigger online SIPP players; well established and often heavier advertisers with brand awareness clout and a large array of investment options; so much so it can be a lot for the beginner to take in. Examples include Hargreaves Lansdown, AJ Bell, Interactive Investor, Fidelity, Bestinvest, Charles Stanley

Traditional Life Companies

Mostly those firms that have been around in one form or another for a long time offering a broad range of financial products. Examples on this site include Aviva, Legal & General, Standard Life

Robo-Advisor Platforms

A bit of an umbrella term but broadly speaking it is a platform which guides you through a series of choices to help you select your investments. So they can be useful for beginners but keep an eye on the costs, and often a limited selection of investments. Examples include Nutmeg, Moneybox, Moneyfarm, Wealthify

Neo-FinTechs

A broad classification for those which can be considered "app first" and/or part of the new wave of fast growing UK fintechs. Freetrade and AJ Bell Dodl are the examples here

ETF (Funds) Only

Sometimes called a "fund supermarket" these often very low-cost SIPP platforms just offer funds (so that's sort of pre-packaged sets of investments). No individual stocks and shares on these platforms, so you are restricted to some extent. Examples include Vanguard and Investengine
